Thick Girls Vs. Thin Girls

Published 10 September 2019

While we are a forward thinking society and generation, we have to face facts, and the fact is that the world that we live in today, has a major influence on our body image. Women are constantly in a state of confusion over what the accepted body size is, should it be thick, or should it be thin? It is just too much drama honestly and quite frankly; I am absolutely fed up with the thick vs. thin war.

A couple of years back, especially in the entertainment and fashion industry, thin girls used to be the in thing. They used to be the elite and the most coveted girls, the ones that everyone wanted to be like. They were ambassadors for weight loss recipes and dieting solutions. Every single young girl wanted to remain thin in order to fit into society. These days, however, we are seeing a whole lot more thick ladies in the limelight of fashion and entertainment than we used to, and this is a welcome development considering the evolution of the fashion industry – and our bodies as a whole.

From the inception of fashion icons, we can clearly see the turns that the industry has taken in terms of body shapes. From Marilyn Monroe, who was proudly thick and sexy to Audrey Hepburn who was ramrod thin and proud of it. Both women were clearly comfortable with their body types, shapes, and physiques, and they were not afraid to show and flaunt it.

Even though the industry is still in a relatively confused state as regards body shapes and types, there are several fashion icons today who proudly flaunt both body types with full confidence. For the thin ladies, one is the ever gracious Victoria Beckham, and for the thick ladies, one of the most popular icons is Khloe Kardashian. Despite the obvious difference in their bodies, both of these women proudly show off their bodies comfortably with their individual sense of style.

As a result of the fact that our society is beginning to accept that thick women can be both sexy and stylish, we are beginning to see a lot thicker inclined fashion trends making their way forward. Today, we are seeing more and more clothes that accentuate curves and are made to suit the curvy hourglass figure rather than clothes that are simply made to cater to thin, and rather straight women.

As a matter of fact, many designers today are making it a point of duty to cater to both thin and thick girls. Think of the likes of Nikki Minaj, Salma Hayek, J-Lo, Beyonce and Christina Hendricks for the curvy girls. And for the thin girls – Nicole Ritchie, Kate Moss, Angelina Jolie and famously, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child.

In this now silent war between thick girls and thin girls, the media actually has a massive role to play. When the body of one celebrity is emphasized over the others, it sends out a message to the world that says we endorse and approve of this body type. This message is received by women, and young girls all around the world and many who are trying to fit in would automatically want to look that particular way until another celebrity body endorsement come up. This is the constant cycle that women are placed in by the media, having to face and go through a series of indirect body shaming insecurities.

In truth, there is really no competition between thick girls and thin girls; each of them has their uniqueness and their own peculiarities. I mean when you think about it, no two thin girls are the same, and in turn, no two thick girls are the same. Each has their own unique detail, and because of this, each style is different.

Styles are based on not just body type but also on personality, and this is something that transcends both the thick and the thin spectrum.

Regardless, a womans’ primary concern when it comes to fashion should be finding what suits her body shape and what accentuates her features. Knowing this helps you to make sure that you present your body in the most flattering way possible.

This also applies to women who happen to find themselves in the middle – like me. I can tell you now that this spot is not the best place to be. It is really rather bothersome. You are not thick, and neither are you thin. You do not fall into either category you are just stuck somewhere in the middle. Relax and take it easy; the same applies to you. Know your features and learn to accentuate them.

Each and every single body type is wonderfully unique and beautiful in its own way and fashion today is just so vast that there is something out there for everyone.

One of the major ways to attain the style that you want for your body shape is by first learning to love your body the way it is. However you identify your body shape or type, self and body love is the first step to making sure that you gain that level of confidence and comfort that would allow you to enjoy your body the way that it is.

Instead of striving to attain the latest body shape that is trending or in vogue, embrace your what you have girl – and love it!  Remember, no one can wear it like you!
